A subject line? In this economy?
Welcome to the Mythical Type newsletter, where I share projects I’m working on, things I’ve been reading, and sources of inspiration.
Hi there! I hope you’re doing well. I have a couple sneak peeks for you this month and some zine news.
New zine, but it’s kind of a secret (for now)
I’m participating in the SunScream Zine Exchange, which is a bunch of zinesters swapping new zines through the mail. The zine I made for the exchange is called “Modern-day Sisyphus.” It’s about tasks we do that never actually end, like washing dishes and taking out the trash.
The zine isn’t in my Etsy shop yet, but it will be available later this month. Here’s a sneak peek. On the left, the index card where I outlined the idea for the zine, and on the right, the finished zine.
I made a video that goes through my process for making mini zines, from initial idea to the finished zine. I used “Modern-day Sisyphus” as an example, so you can catch some more details about the zine in the video:

Last month’s newsletter included a video tutorial on how to design mini zines in Canva. The PDF version is now available, too! You can download it for free on my website.
My zines are in a distro!
A few of my zines are available from Common Meter Press, an online zine distro based in the Pacific Northwest.
Three of my zines are in a bundle: Timers for travelers, Playground games from the 1990s, and Types of teleportation.
Lots of great stuff in their shop. Be sure to check it out!
An art project that isn’t a zine (yeah!)
I’m participating in the Pocket Art Swap at curio. Curio is an art supply shop and gallery in Lancaster, PA. Every year they hold an exhibition where artists make small works of art (essentially artist trading cards) based on a theme. Everyone’s art is on display in the gallery for a month. Then the cards get swapped and each artist gets a set with one piece from every other participating artist.
Curio is doing two exhibitions this year, so that’s work from 32 people. “Flora and Fauna” will be on display during August. “On My Mind” (the one I’m in) will be on display in September.
I’m doing a left brain, right brain kind of thing with my cards. Here’s a sneak peek at some of them:
If you’re local to Lancaster, definitely check out Curio’s gallery in August and September!
One blog post to round things out
Do personal brands matter? (CJ Chilvers) - I like the idea to use “reputation” instead of “brand.” Then you cut through corporate b.s. about “how to build a brand.”
“Reputation” simplifies to, what people think of you, based on your actions and personality. And if you’re not a celebrity, “reputation” feels way more grounded than your “personal brand.”
Thank you for reading!
As always, thank you for following this newsletter and supporting my work.
