Fake spring, still winter
Welcome to the Mythical Type newsletter, where I share projects I’m working on, things I’ve been reading, and sources of inspiration.
Hi there! I don’t know about you, but February felt long and short to me, at the same time. Strange.
Lancaster Zine Fest
Exciting zine news!!! Lancaster, PA, is having its first zine fest on April 22!
I’ll have a table with my zines (and free stickers!), and I’m leading a workshop. The workshop will be beginner-friendly. We’ll spend some time brainstorming ideas and then making an 8-page mini zine.
Lancaster Zine Fest is free admission. There will be zines, workshops, art, music…and food! All the food vendors in Southern Market will be open for normal business. If you’re local, I hope you can come out!
I started prepping for zine fest, and I’m planning to have a new zine done in time. Maybe 2 zines! We shall see…
Zine fest was my big announcement for this issue. On to stuff I’ve been watching.
Video killed the…essay?
Here’s a tutorial for using mind maps to manage projects. I haven’t seen this use before, and I thought you might find it interesting, too.
I don’t remember when I first came across the Polyphonic YouTube channel, but I started watching videos on this channel again. They’re all video essays about music. Beautiful, insightful video essays. I don’t have the knowledge or context to talk about music on this level, but I love watching people who do. Here’s a video about The Talking Heads:
This whole channel is videos about why companies succeed or fail. I came across these videos while I was researching for one of my new zines. I will give you a hint—I’m making a zine about one of my favorite toy stores. (And it’s not Toys R Us.)
Not a video
I watched Bullet Train, really liked it, have recommended it to people, but…haven’t quite been able to explain why I like it so much.
So it’s a good thing Warren Ellis put words to what I was thinking about: Everything in Bullet Train is there for a reason. Minor spoilers in his blog post.
Thank you for reading!
As always, thank you for following this newsletter and supporting my work.
If you want to see more from me, you can follow me on Instagram, check out my blog, or browse my zines on Etsy or Big Cartel.
If you’re local to Lancaster, mark April 22 on your calendar for zine fest!
Until next time!
