Welcome to the Mythical Type newsletter, where I share projects I’m working on, things I’ve been reading, and sources of inspiration.
Zine news
Issue 3 of Broken Galaxies is out! I’m so excited to be included in this issue with a talented group of creators. This series focuses on sci-fi, fantasy, and horror themes. Copies are available from Vlasinda Productions.
August marks 2 years that I’ve been selling zines on Etsy! Everything in my shop will be 20% off from August 22-31. Thank you so much for your support, whether that’s sharing my zines on social media, trading with me, or purchasing my zines on Etsy.
More news — I’ve been accepted to be part of the San Fernando Valley Zine Fest! This is a virtual zine fest that will run all of September. I’ll share more details when I have them.
Zine community
If you’re looking for inspiration or want to start making zines (you should make a zine!), here are some things to check out.
Zine Lunch! - Zine Lunch! is a workshop series presented by Sarabande Books. These virtual workshops are free, open to everyone, and offered over Zoom on Fridays at noon EST.
Zineville - Zineville is a YouTube channel and Instagram profile about making zines, zine reviews, interviews, and going to zine fests.
Zine layouts - I wrote two posts on my blog about laying out zines. One is about how to figure out page order for printing zines. The other is about how to lay out a zine in Canva. And here’s an excellent video I found about zine layouts, printing, and distribution.
Site updates
I go in phases where I do a lot of work on my site, and I seem to be in one now. :) Here are things I’ve been adding.
Zines overview page - I wanted one place to summarize my zines, so that’s this.
Tools - a list of the digital and analog tools I use
Follow - this has links to where I post online and a list of my favorite people on the internet. If you like my work, you may like theirs, too.
Process - a new category on my blog for posts about creative processes. Most of these posts are about making zines, but I also have some bullet journal posts in there.
That’s it for this month’s updates. I hope you’re enjoying summer and managing through heat waves. Summer is my least favorite season, so I’m counting down days to fall.
Let me know in the comments if you’re working on any fun projects or have watched, listened to, or read something really cool recently.
And if you aren’t subscribed to this newsletter, you can sign up below to get issues via email.
Thank you for reading! If you want to see more from me, you can follow me on Instagram, check out my blog, or browse my zines on Etsy.
Oh, thanks for the resources! I've started early exploration of creating a short kidlit illustrated zine. I've already checked out your layout posts and may check out the lunch sessions if it works with my schedule!
