Welcome to the Mythical Type newsletter, where I share projects I’m working on, things I’ve been reading, and sources of inspiration.
Lancaster Zine Fest approaches!
Lancaster Zine Fest is just a few weeks away! If you’re near Lancaster, PA, come check out zines and independent artists on April 22 from noon to 5 p.m. at Southern Market. Admission is free.
I’ll have a table with my zines (and free stickers!), and I’m leading a workshop. It’s shaping up to be a fun day!
New zines
I made two zines in March! It was sort of unexpected, and these came together quickly. Seems like a zine fest is good motivation for me. 🙂 These will both be at my table at Lancaster Zine Fest, and they’re available on Etsy right now.
“Movies I never want to see again” is a mini zine about movies I watched one time and do not want to watch again. This doesn't mean they're bad movies! But something about them makes me feel like once is enough.
"Playground games in the 1990s" is a pros and cons list of recess activities that were popular in elementary school.
Special sneak preview
I’m finalizing pages for a 20-page zine about Zany Brainy, a chain of educational toy stores from the 1990s. Check out the first few pages below! (Newsletter readers get the first look, because you’re awesome.)
The rest of the zine includes my favorite toys from Zany Brainy, a couple newspaper clippings from 90s toy trends, and what happened to Zany Brainy after it declared bankruptcy.
Copies will be available in my Etsy shop (probably by next weekend) and at Lancaster Zine Fest. Also, I’m planning to have digital downloads available (which is new for me!). I’m working out the details.
Zine tutorials (maybe?)
I’ve been using Canva for zine layouts (including the zines I shared above). This past month, I clocked a lot of time in the app!
A few people have asked me about using Canva to make zines. I’ve been thinking about ways to share my process, and video tutorials seem to be the way to go.
If you make zines (or want to), would video tutorials be helpful to you?
Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
I’m planning on making a video tutorial about 8-page mini zines in Canva, regardless of poll results. 😅 But I’m open to your questions and suggestions.
