Welcome to the Mythical Type newsletter, where I share projects I’m working on, things I’ve been reading, and sources of inspiration.
Hello and Happy New Year!
I don’t do much for annual recaps, but I do keep track of movies I watch throughout the year. I made a quick zine about the top movies I watched in 2022.
The full list of movies I watched in 2022 is on my blog.
What movies did you enjoy this past year? Let me know in the comments.
New Year, New You (optional)
A few years ago, I made a zine for New Year’s inspired by the phrase “New Year, new you.” But with a sci-fi twist: It’s a guide for what to do when you meet someone who looks exactly like you (e.g., a clone, you from the future).
Fast-forward two years, and “So You Met Your Doppelganger” is my best-selling zine. That amuses me because mostly I made it as a joke, and I gave copies to friends who I knew would appreciate the joke. :)
Anyway. A gentle reminder that a new year doesn’t mean you have to make a new you. Be whatever you want, whenever you want.
New category in my Etsy shop
I added a category in my Etsy shop called “Last chance.” This is for zines that I’m going to stop selling after my current stock runs out. If you’ve had your eye on any of these, maybe get them sooner rather than later. Also, since you’re awesome and read my newsletter, use the code MYTHICAL10 for 10% off your order.
A couple zine stats
In 2022, I sold 330 zines!! Wow wow wow, thank you so much for your support!
To date, these are my most popular zines (by number of copies out in the world):
So You Met Your Doppelganger
How to teleport safely
How to spot a time traveler
Questions to ask yourself: Part 1
Questions to ask yourself: Part 2
Text message moods
I’ve really enjoyed making zines the past few years and meeting zinesters in the community. I’m looking forward to more of that in 2023. :)
Some things I’ve been reading
Write a brag document - The summary is: keep a document of your accomplishments at work. It helps you keep track of the impact you’ve made. It’s handy when performance reviews come along. And it could help you notice patterns in your work.
I think this is useful outside of work, too. A brag document might also be beneficial in recognizing what you’ve done with hobbies or skills you’re learning.
How to make a zine - I came across this post that is a great introduction to making zines.
Illustrated Sketchbooking in Full Color - Not reading, but watching and learning. This is a (paid) course about illustrating with Posca pens. It’s taught by James Chapman, and he has posted lots of his sketchbook pages to his Instagram.
