The straw in the stack
I’ve got zine news, thoughts on books I’m reading, and a couple other things.
Zine contribution
I contributed a page to Pocket Thoughts Annual #4, which was released in January. The zine includes art, comics, poetry, and creative writing from 24 zinesters around the world.
Here’s what my page looks like:
Copies are available from Pocket Thoughts’ Etsy shop.
My newest zine
“Everyday Time Travel” is about ordinary moments that feel like time moves differently than normal.
Out of the zines I’ve made so far, this one probably came together the fastest, from the initial idea to the finished zine.
I made the backgrounds with scrapbook paper, and I added some details with fineliner pens. Then I wrote the text on white paper, tore out pieces, and glued them over the scrapbook paper. I like how all the colors and patterns came together.
“Everyday Time Travel” is available in my Etsy shop.
Books I’ve been reading
I finished reading Several Short Sentences About Writing by Verlyn Klinkenborg. I like the points the author makes about writing for clarity, revising sentence by sentence, and making sure your writing actually says what you want it to say.
But I do not like the way the book is laid out. No chapter or section breaks. Every sentence starts on a new line. Page after page of that made the writing feel too dense to me. I couldn’t read much in one sitting.
Good ideas but not in a format I found helpful.
I started reading Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport.
The overall theme is being intentional about how you use digital technologies, especially social media. The book was written pre-Covid, so I’m interested in seeing how examples and advice might apply differently now that we rely more on digital technologies when being in-person isn’t safe.
Around the internet
I’ve been listening to the Encanto soundtrack almost every day for the last few weeks. Here are covers of two of the songs: ”Surface Pressure” and “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.” These are bardcore, which re-makes modern music in medieval styles.
Enjoy!
