Welcome to the Mythical Type newsletter, where I share projects I’m working on, things I’ve been watching, and sources of inspiration.
Happy spooky season! 🎃 I’ve been spending a lot of time tinkering online (more on that below), so let’s see…updates. Updates.
Urban Legends is out!
Urban Legends is a contributor zine with art and writing about urban legends, myths, and folklore. Eighteen people contributed work from the U.S., Canada, Scotland, Belgium, and Germany. 36 pages! I’m really happy with how this came out.
I mailed a copy to each contributor, and a limited number of copies are available in my Etsy shop (U.S. only).
If you’re outside the U.S. and would like a copy, please send me a message.
Also one of the contributors made a super cool pendant as a companion to her story. The pendant is available on Etsy. (And it’s one of a kind!)
Mythical Type has a new home
Mythical Type, my site for zines and creative projects, is now hosted on Micro.blog! My WordPress hosting was up for renewal in a few weeks, and I was tired of dealing with WordPress (too cumbersome for a personal site) and hosting (I don’t want to play IT specialist in my free time).
I have some formatting to fix but otherwise, the migration went smoothly. If you use an RSS feeder to follow blogs, the Mythical Type feeds are on the Follow page.
New resources
Since I’ve been tinkering with blogs, I came across some new (to me) resources.
omg.lol - Your own landing page on the web. Here’s mine. Plus there are several services rolled in: a Mastodon instance (hi!), a weblog, photo sharing, email forwarding, and some other things I haven’t dug into yet.
HTML for People - A free book that teaches you how to create a website with HTML.
Pika - A simple blogging platform. Really easy to set up and start writing a personal blog. I tested this when I was deciding where to move Mythical Type. I think Pika is a great service, but I wanted to tinker a bit more than they allow, so that’s why I chose Micro.blog in the end.
mmm.page - Kind of like making a webpage via collage.
What I’ve been watching
No spoilers, no worries.
Madame Web (streaming on Netflix) - Reviews for this were TERRIBLE when it was in theaters. The most irritating part for me was how badly written the dialogue is. But overall I didn’t think it was that bad. Definitely worse superhero movies out there and worse movies overall.
Nobody Wants This (streaming on Netflix) - This is getting lots of positive coverage, and Netflix already confirmed a season 2. I thought the show was…fine? It’s light-hearted and fun to watch. Also, take my perspective with a grain of salt because this is really not the type of show I usually watch. 😄 Kristen Bell and Adam Brody seemed like a great match as the lead characters (and they are), and that’s why I tuned in.
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft (streaming on Netflix) - Straight up action adventure animated series. It’s not necessarily geared towards kids or adults, but it feels a lot like watching Saturday morning cartoons in the 90s. Simple, easy to follow story. Solid animation and voice acting.
That’s it from me this month. Let me know what you’ve been up to, maybe.
