Zines everywhere
Welcome to the Mythical Type newsletter, where I share projects I’m working on, things I’ve been reading, and sources of inspiration.
Hi there! I hope summer is off to a great start for you.
July is International Zine Month! If you’re looking for a way to get involved in zines, this is the time! Stolen Sharpie Revolution has a list of zine activities for this month.
Use the code JULYZINES for 20% off zines in my Etsy shop. The code is valid from today through July 31, 2023.
Thank you so much for your support!
I’ve been working on a few different projects, so let’s jump in.
New zine about car dependency
Lately I’ve been more annoyed than usual about how much we depend on cars every day, so I made a mini zine about it. "Things we wouldn't have to worry about if we didn't depend on cars" is about car-related stress.
You can read it on my blog or purchase a copy on Etsy.
Another new zine: Song lyrics I mishear
“Song lyrics I mishear” is a mini zine that lists lyrics where I hear the wrong words. Each page is about one song and includes the actual lyrics along with what I hear instead.
You can read it on Instagram or purchase a copy on Etsy.
Remember to use the code JULYZINES for 20% off zines in my Etsy shop this month!
Video tutorial on designing mini zines in Canva
I made a video tutorial that shows how to set up a design file in Canva to make 8-page mini zines. The video goes over how to set up guides and what the page order will be. Everything in the tutorial is done with the free version of Canva.
You can watch it on YouTube. I’m also making a written version of the tutorial that will be available to download as a PDF.
I keep forgetting to tell you I’m on Ko-fi
About a year ago, I set up a page on Ko-fi, which is basically a tip jar on the internet. If you have the means, enjoy my work, and want to support me, Ko-fi is an easy place to do that. Donations go towards my art supplies, web hosting costs, and, of course, coffee.
I don’t want anyone to feel obligated to leave a tip, and I don’t have any plans for a paid community or exclusive, paid-for content. And I’m not changing anything about how or what I post online. Ko-fi is simply there as a tip jar, for anyone who wants to use it.
What I’ve been watching
The Little Mermaid (live-action) - Overall it was a good movie and very close to the animated version. Some things don't translate well to live action, like realistic animals that can talk to humans. It comes off campy sometimes.
Arcane (Netflix series) - Animated series based on the video game “League of Legends” (which I know nothing about). I’m a few episodes in and I really like it! The art style is fun to watch — lots of colors and vivid imagery. My favorite thing so far is the story does not pull its punches. When you feel like something bad is going to happen to the characters, it does. The plot doesn’t twist into a joke or a fake out like some (cough) superhero movies.
Thank you for reading!
